Travel Packing Tips
Summer is here and it’s time to go on vacations and trips, so I thought I would share some helpful tips for packing for travel. I over pack way too much, let’s just say I do not know how to travel light…or I like to be prepared. But I have learned a few tricks from my family, friends, and other sources over the years to try to make packing less stressful and messy.
- Pack in a clean area free from other items. I use my bed, it helps to eliminate distractions and allows me to see everything I am bringing…or to cut down on stuff if I need to.
- I make a detailed packing list down to the number of socks I will need, plus one extra, to help me avoid confusion on what to bring.
- I always wash clothes before packing.
- While on my trip, I keep dirty clothes inside out and on the bottom, side, other pouch, etc of luggage so I know what is dirty and what is clean.
Plan outfits before packing, this way packing it is faster and easier and there is no over packing because everything I need is grabbed. Also, since my outfits are already planned, I stack them on top of each other in my suit case.
When I was little my dad told me to roll up belts or socks and put them in my shoes to save space in my suit case. Now, I do that plus jewelry (in bags) and any pills/vitamins.
Anything with liquid that may explode goes in a large zip-lock bag. I learned this the hard way after traveling in high altitude a few times. Now shampoo, conditioner, face wash, contact solution, ANYTHING liquid goes in a large bag. No mess! Also, makeup can break during travel, so pack pressed powders with a folded piece of tissue, toilet paper, or cotton pad inside the case. (See photo on side) This will protect it from hard handling, and if it does break, you can learn how to fix it here.
Store jewelry in a small bag, old pill bottle, zip-lock bag, etc to avoid losing anything. Also, I saw on pinterest that a necklace can be put through a straw to prevent tangling. Super helpful!
This trip I am bringing a small cross body purse to use. I can go out sightseeing, have fun, and not worry about losing anything or having anything stolen.
My dad also told me to stack my luggage in the car so it is standing up. Anyone can have easy access to their bag if they need it, and the luggage won’t move around if I drive crazy (which happens from time to time).
Something my sister told me today was wrap my shoes in a shower cap or grocery bag before putting in my suit case. It protects my new shoes and my clothes, thanks Nicole!
I got this bag as a freebie from Victoria’s Secret, and to be honest this is the first time I have ever used it. I am staying in a hotel with 4 other people, so a bag to keep my undies private is pretty nice. It can be used to bring dirty clothes home in, or to keep bathing suits, jewelry, or whatever.
Always bring a flashlight, emergency food, a map of where you are going, and reservation conformations. And tell someone you are going and when you are coming home, just in case anything happens.
