Map Coasters
I have decided to make a bunch of different kinds of coasters and see how many ideas I can come up with. I already made Wine Cork Coasters and received tons of positive comments about them! Today I made coasters out of an old map of California I “borrowed” from my sister Nicole. You can get them free from any AAA office location. The inspiration behind map coasters came from my mother; she and my dad are planning their retirement soon and wish to buy a large RV to travel the country for months at a time. While it still will be a year until they retire and begin their long trip, I thought travel themed coasters would be a nice touch to their RV!
On a recent trip to Home Depot with Nicole, I went looking for tile samples to use as a base for my coasters. I found hard wood floor samples with already finished backs, these are perfect! The sample is free which is great and the back is already finished making my project very easy and completely free.
- Ceramic tiles or floor samples
- Map
- Mod Podge
- Sponge brush
- Scissors
- Pen or pencil
- Felt backing for tile (if needed)
Create a work space by laying down old newspaper to protect surface underneath the project.
Trace a tile on to map and cut out shape. I did certain places on my map I thought were interesting; like places we used to vacation when I was a kid, or Los Angeles County that we live in.
Mod Podge paper map shape on to tile sample. To help the paper stick, I did a layer of Mod Podge on my tile before I added my map paper.
Cover all of paper map with Mod Podge. Allow to dry 10 minutes and repeat again. I did 3 layers.
Allow tiles to dry fully over night so they are not tacky or sticky. If desired, finish with a clear sealer and add felt on bottom.
