DIY Bouquet Potpourri

On 14 September, 2012 by Jackie

I’ve mentioned before that I love when people give me flowers but I hate when they die.  A while ago my boyfriend brought me flowers at work to cheer me up when I was having a bad day, and I shared my little tips and secrets of how to make cut flowers last longer. Well now I will show you what I do with the flowers when they pass the look pretty in a vase stage!

Once flowers are  beyond reviving, remove from vase and rinse off stems to ensure there is no mold or mildew. I saved the bouquet my boyfriend bought me to make potpourri; simply hang flowers upside down in a dry place where they won’t get wet or be disturbed. I hung them from a thumb tack in our pantry we hardly use. Allow flowers to dry fully; it make take a few weeks depending on weather a climate.

Once flowers are completely dry, lay out a few pieces of newspaper, and use scissors to cut dried flowers off stems in any way you like. I added some lavender so it would help add some scent.

Continue cutting until done with flowers.  Place dried flowers in a jar or dish. And a few drops of essential oil, lemon juice, or any desired scent.

Cover jar and shake to mix scent around.
I added the ribbon from my bouquet as a decoration and put my potpourri on a cabinet in my bathroom.

My jar is a little big to leave space to add more flowers later!
