unclog a drain

DIY Unclog a Shower Drain

I have a recurring problem in the shower.  Every few months the drain will start to drain slower and slower until one day I am standing in a few inches of soapy water by the end of my shower.  It is time to unclog a shower drain.  When we lived in an apartment my husband unclogged the shower drain the shower drain every few months. A task he was not to fond of and was hoping would go away with our new house.  Well three months after moving in it happens again and we need to unclog the shower drain (eww!!)  Huge clumps of soapy hair is one of the most disgusting things.  It is  not for the weak stomached like me.  My husband even has a hard time unclogging drains and he is an ambulance driver!

I am not a fan of chemical smells and since our new shower is adjoining our bedroom I was hesitant to pour any nasty smelling tonics down the drain.  They had to use something before Draino was invented, right?  I want to unclog a shower drain naturally, more specifically unclog a shower drain with baking soda and vinegar.

What you need:

  • 1 cup salt
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 gallon boiling water

First remove any stoppers from the drain.  My drain is in the center of the shower pan so we had to unscrew a drain cover.

Our clog was maybe a little too big and we also used a plunger to force the clog free.  It has been at least a week and we haven’t had any problems.  No chemicals for us from now on!
